Our next Rialto Recommends is Barbra Streisand's 1991 film THE PRINCE OF TIDES adapted for the screen by Pat Conroy and Becky Johnston from Conroy's novel. A New York psychiatrist treating an emotionally scarred woman finds it helpful to discuss her South Carolina family's troubled history with the woman's twin brother. He and the psychiatrist find themselves drawn together by their equally turbulent pasts, and they form an alliance which ultimately leads to romance. Roger Ebert said "An assured and very serious love story that allows neither humor nor romance to get in the way of its deeper and darker subject." While Variety said "A deeply moving exploration of the tangled emotions of a dysfunctional Southern family, this lovingly crafted film of Pat Conroy's novel centers on Nick Nolte's performance of a lifetime." THE PRINCE OF TIDES is streaming on Hulu or available to rent from Amazon, Vudu, GooglePlay, YouTube and others for a modest fee. Nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Set Decoration and Best Score, Billy Crystal quippy wondered in his Oscar monologue in the Spring of 1992 if the film directed itself given that Streisand was completely overlooked by the Academy for her directorial work but the DGA did nominate her alongside Jonathan Demme, Barry Levinson, Oliver Stone, and Ridley Scott. Demme took home the DGA award and the Oscar for his direction of The Silence of the Lambs. The Oscars nominated John Singleton for Boyz n the Hood instead of Streisand for Best Director - otherwise the Oscar nominations for Best Director mirrored the DGA nominees.
