Unhook the Stars
Our next Rialto Recommends is an indie film that barely had a release in theatres. UNHOOK THE STARS is writer/director Nick Cassavetes debut feature. Nick is the son of legendary filmmaker John Cassavetes and actress Gena Rowlands. Rowlands stars alongside Marisa Tomei. Widowed mother Mildred (Rowland) must suddenly redefine herself and find an outlet for her nurturing side when her adult daughter moves out of the family home. Though Mildred thinks she's found her purpose when her neighbor, overworked single mother Monica (Tomei), asks her to look after her little boy, she has great difficulty learning to strike a healthy balance between giving selflessly to others and remembering to take care of herself. Roger Ebert said "Cassavetes has made a movie about a slice of life. But it is about manageable, not unmanageable, life. It has an underlying contentment." The San Francisco Chronicle said "Rowlands infuses Mildred's interior life with a complexity that isn't always apparent from her somewhat chilly, bland exterior." UNHOOK THE STARS is streaming on Hoopla or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu, and Apple.
