The late Carl Reiner was more known for his television work than for his theatrical features but his first theatrical feature was a major success in 1977. Our next Rialto Recommends is OH GOD! starring the unlikely pairing of George Burns as the Almighty and John Denver as the grocery store manager who God picks to deliver his message to the world. OH GOD was directed by Carl Reiner with a screenplay by Larry Gilbert which received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. As Roger Ebert mentioned in his review the film struck the right tone for the times by avoiding both pious religious platitudes and cheap shots about faith. Warner Brothers crafted a cheeky but whimsical campaign for the film which included an iconic poster featuring Burns and the tag line "Anybody who could turn Lot's wife into a pillar of salt, incinerate Sodom and Gomorrah and make it rain for forty days and forty nights has got to be a fun guy." Ebert raved "Carl Reiner's OH GOD! is a treasure of a movie: A sly, civilized, quietly funny speculation on what might happen if God endeavored to present himself in the flesh yet once again to forgetful Man." OH GOD is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, DirectTV and others HERE.
