Our next Rialto Recommends is director James Marsh's 2008 documentary MAN ON WIRE. Using actual footage from the event seamlessly mingled with new re-enactments, filmmaker James Marsh masterfully recreates high-wire daredevil Philippe Petit's 1974 stunt: performing acrobatics on a thin wire strung between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Plotting his feat like a master cat burglar, Petit enlists the help of a motley group of friends as he calculates every detail, from acquiring building access to stringing up the wire, and manages to pull off an astounding crime. James Marsh's doc about artist Phililppe Petit's artful caper brings you every ounce of suspense that can be wrung from a man on a (suspended) wire. The LA Times raved "They say that seeing is believing, but MAN ON WIRE will make you doubt what your eyes are telling you -- it really will -- as you shake your head in amazement and awe." While the Toronto Star said "This film is a celebration of human achievement; it soars with the promise that we are shackled to the ground only by lack of imagination and will." MAN ON WIRE is streaming on Tubi, Kanopy, Realeyz, and Magnolia. It is also available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, Apple and others. Check out or revisit this wonderful documentary about the daring stunt that changed the way New Yorkers felt about the World Trade Center.
