The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Jacques Demy elevates the basic drama of everyday life into a soaring opera full of bittersweet passion and playful charm, featuring a timeless performance from Catherine Deneuve in our next Rialto Recommends THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG. Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve), a beautiful young Frenchwoman who works at a small-town boutique selling umbrellas, falls for dashing mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). Their brief romance is interrupted when Guy is drafted to serve in the Algerian War. Though pregnant by Guy, Geneviève marries an older businessman, Roland (Marc Michel), and begins to move on with her life. Throughout the musical film, all the characters' dialogue is conveyed through song. In 2004 the Los Angeles Times raved "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG has stood the test of time as beautifully as Deneuve and seems likely to enchant future generations as fully as it has audiences over the past four decades." In 2000 Roger Ebert wrote "It is remembered as a bold original experiment, and now that it is restored and back in circulation, it can also be remembered as a surprisingly effective film, touching and knowing and, like Deneuve, ageless." THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG is streaming on HBOMax, The Criterion Channel and Kanopy or is available to rent from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube or Apple for a modest fee HERE.
