Sometimes movies bring to our attention stories about people we didn't know of before or remind us of past events or cause us to look at our past in a different light. Our next Rialto Recommends is 2015's Oscar nominee TRUMBO starring Bryan Cranston and Diane Lane. In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was Hollywood's top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. TRUMBO (directed by Jay Roach) recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. The Los Angeles Times said "Trumbo" is timely in its portrayal of a moment when political speech is dangerously charged, yet unabashedly old-fashioned in the sincerity of its storytelling." While Rolling Stone raved "Cranston is a powerhouse as Trumbo in his glory, speaking truth to power." TRUMBO is streaming on Netflix, Kanopy, DirectTV, Showtime and Starz HERE.
