Tuesday, December 1st is both World AIDS Day and #GivingTuesday so our next Rialto Recommends is Bill Sherwood's 1986 drama PARTING GLANCES. Groundbreaking in its sensitive, nuanced depiction of gay relationships in the midst of New York’s AIDS crisis, this tender and witty drama revolves around two men, Michael (Richard Ganoung) and Robert (John Bolger), who have been lovers for years. Robert is being transferred out of the country for two years, leaving Michael behind. Their close friend Nick (Steve Buscemi in one of his earliest roles), who is also Michael’s former lover, is dying of AIDS. Amid these upheavals, each man must navigate the loyalties of friendship and the vicissitudes of romantic love. In 2018 San Diego City Beat said "The film may be shot like a breezy New York City trifle, but an aching undercurrent resides in every interaction." While Seattle's The Stranger said in 2017 "Tender and resolutely unsentimental, PARTING GLANCES avoided future AIDS movie clichs not because the example had yet to be set, but because its interests lay elsewhere." PARTING GLANCES is streaming on The Criterion Channel, Tubi, Kanopy, Fandor, OVID, and FlixFling or is available to rent for a modest fee from FlixFling. This Giving Tuesday we encourage you to contribute to two vital Sonoma County organizations Food For Thought and Face To Face. Both organizations provide vital services to those facing life threatening illnesses in our community.
