Our next Rialto Recommends is 2000's THE CUP. While the soccer World Cup is being played in France, two young Tibetan refugees arrive at a monastery/boarding school in exile in India. Its atmosphere of serene contemplation is disrupted by soccer fever, the chief instigator being a young student, the soccer enthusiast Orgyen who desperately seeks a TV to watch the final. The Los Angeles Times raved "Charming, slyly comic and far from conventionally religious." While Roger Ebert said "A delightful demonstration of how spirituality can coexist quite happily with an intense desire for France to defeat Brazil." THE CUP is streaming on Hoopla, Tubi, and PopcornFlix or is available to rent for a modest fee from GooglePlay, YouTube or Vudu HERE.
