Our next Rialto Recommends is a small Irish film that is set at Christmastime in Dublin. KISSES from writer/director Lance Daly was released in the US in the summer of 2010 and has fairly simple log-line: Two kids, Dylan and Kylie, run away from home at Christmas and spend a night of magic and terror on the streets of inner-city Dublin. Although admittedly sleight, this gritty but tender coming-of-age Irish drama features some impressive work both in front, and behind the camera. The Los Angeles Times said "Only 75 minutes long and made in Ireland for what had to be a micro budget, this sweet, savvy and heartfelt film will impact you more and stay around longer than many more elephantine productions." While the Village Voice said "The movie's ending may be less satisfying than that of "Slumdog Millionaire"--a film you can love for its infectiously wishful exuberance, but never fully believe in--but KISSES is truer to the tragedy of a generation of children whom we have utterly failed. If they're anything like Kylie and Dylan, they'll be back to let us know." KISSES is streaming on Kanopy and Tubi. This is a movie you may want to turn closed captions on for as several critics commented on the thickness of the Irish brogue throughout the feature.
