Our next Rialto Recommends is writer/director Ryan Coogler's feature film debut FRUITVALE STATION. Police violence against people of color is an epidemic. FRUITVALE STATION is the story of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008. The Wall Street Journal raved "At the age of 27 Mr. Coogler seems to have it all, and have it firmly in place a clearsighted take on his subject (no airbrushing of flaws or foibles here, just confident brush strokes by a mature artist); a spare, spontaneous style that can go beyond naturalism into a state of poetic grace, and a gift for getting, or allowing, superb actors to give flawless performances." While the Boston Globe said "Writer-director Coogler could easily have turned FRUITVALE STATION into a work of agitprop — a film to work you into a froth of anger — but he’s after things that are harder to grasp: the measure of a man’s life and the smaller struggles, satisfactions, and injustices that can fill it." FRUITVALE STATION is streaming on Netflix or is available to rent for a modest fee from RedBox, Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others.
