Some would say that the phrase good disaster movie is an oxymoron. Our next Rialto Recommends, Juan Antonio Bayona's THE IMPOSSIBLE starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor from 2012, is an exception. In December 2004, close-knit family Maria, Henry and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand. But the day after Christmas, the idyllic holiday turns into an incomprehensible nightmare when a terrifying roar rises from the depths of the sea, followed by a wall of black water that devours everything in its path. Though Maria and her family face their darkest hour, unexpected displays of kindness and courage ameliorate their terror. The Philadelphia Inquirer said "THE IMPOSSIBLE is primal stuff, a tribute to the power of family, to the determination of a mother and father, defying nature, defying the odds, driven by hope." The Washington Post said "It's not a momentous story about heroism writ large, but an intimate tale of the small acts of kindness and connection that can occur when people are most desperate." And Salon wrote "An intense and compelling family melodrama from Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona that sets a new standard for disaster cinema." THE IMPOSSIBLE is streaming on Netflix, Tubi and Sling or is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others.
