Our next Rialto Recommends is the 1986 LGBT classic DESERT HEARTS from director Donna Deitch with a screenplay by Natalie Cooper based upon Jane Rule's novel. DESERT HEARTS tells the story of straight-edge literature professor Vivian who travels to Reno to get away from a relationship breakup when she falls in love with an attractive and unconventional girl named Cay. The Washington Post said "This is an astonishingly polished and nuanced first film. It deserves to be celebrated, not quibbled with." While the Chicago Tribune said "The story is not sensationalistic, although its love scene could not be more emotional. It`s a gentle story of someone being brought in from the cold." DESERT HEARTS is streaming on HBOMax, Fubo, Roku, The Criterion Channel, Showtime, Kanopy, DirectTV, and Reeleyz. It is available for rent for a modest fee from Apple and Amazon.
