For our next Rialto Recommends selection we go back to the 80's and a b-picture that movie people used to refer to as programmers. Usually made by independent companies b-pictures and programmers gave a great many filmmakers their initial success. From 1984 we give you NIGHT OF THE COMET. Two girls from the Valley wake up to find that a passing comet has eradicated their world and left behind a mysterious red-dust and a pack of cannibal mutants. With the help of a friendly truck driver, the girls save the earth from a villainous "think tank," karate chop their way through flesh-eating zombies, and, of course, find time to go to the mall. Trust us, its better than it sounds! Variety said "A successful pastiche of numerous science fiction films, executed with an entertaining, tongue-in-cheek flair that compensates for its absence in originality." TV Guide said "A terrifically witty, refreshingly unpretentious science-fiction film with the least likely and most likable heroines in memory." And SFX Magazine raved "What really makes Night Of The Comet such a joy isn't the nostalgia rush it provides, but the two central characters. These girls just get on with it, dealing with the apocalypse with resourcefulness, crackerjack wit, and machine guns." We all need campy humor and NIGHT OF THE COMET fits the bill perfectly. Check out this girl power sci-fi zombie flick that only the 80's could have produced. NIGHT OF THE COMET is streaming on Tubi, PlutoTV, and the Shudder Channel on Amazon HERE. It is also available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon.
