Our next Rialto Recommends puts a musical spin on Shakespeare at an all boys prep school. Tom Gustafson's WERE THE WORLD MINE dazzled audiences at LGBT film festivals in 2008 ahead of a 2009 theatrical release. If you had a love-potion, who would you make fall madly in love with you? Timothy, prone to escaping his dismal high school reality through dazzling musical daydreams, gets to answer that question in a very real way. After his eccentric teacher casts him as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream, he stumbles upon a recipe hidden within the script to create the play's magical, purple love-pansy. The St Paul Pioneer Press raved "The songs are bright and beautifully sung, the cast's naturalism works against the surreality of the concept, and ultimately, the pieces fit together like a dream." While the Seattle Times said "WERE THE WORLD MINE gets by on sheer charm -- and on Gustafson's inventive direction, Kira Kelly's elegant cinematography and co-screenwriter Cory James Krueckeberg's whimsical production design, which works wonders on a limited budget." WERE THE WORLD MINE is streaming on Hulu and Tubi or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon HERE.
