If you've been enjoying the limited series The Queen's Gambit on Netflix and looking for another female chess story our nest Rialto Recommends choice is for you! Mira Nair's 2016 film QUEEN OF KATWE was a sleeper hit starring David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong'o and Madina Nalwanga in the title role. Living in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle for 10-year-old Phiona (Madina Nalwanga) and her family. Her world changes one day when she meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), a missionary who teaches children how to play chess. Phiona becomes fascinated with the game and soon becomes a top player under Katende's guidance. Her success in local competitions and tournaments opens the door to a bright future and a golden chance to escape from a life of poverty. QUEEN OF KATWE is a feel-good movie of uncommon smarts and passion, and outstanding performances by Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo help to elevate the film past its cliches. Rolling Stone raved "Directed by the great Mira Nair, the film hits you like a shot in the heart. Nyong'o and Oyelowo are both extraordinary, giving newcomer Nalwanga a chance to shine as Phiona grows into her own woman." While the Toronto Star said "There's much to cheer about a movie with such a diverse cast of talent both familiar and new, set in a land that all too often is depicted on screen as a place of war and hopelessness." QUEEN OF KATWE is streaming on Disney+ or available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others.
