From their first feature, Bound to their breathtaking Netflix series Sense8 and the much loved Matrix films, the Warchowski's are visionary filmmakers. Our next Rialto Recommends is their 2012 film CLOUD ATLAS which was co-written and co-directed with another visionary, Tom Tykwer (Run, Lola, Run). CLOUD ATLAS explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. Each member of the ensemble appears in multiple roles as the stories move through time. Its sprawling, ambitious blend of thought-provoking narrative and eye-catching visuals will prove too unwieldy for some, but the sheer size and scope of CLOUD ATLAS are all but impossible to ignore. The Detroit News raved "Exciting, exhausting and energizing, a brazen film that leaves somber cinema seeming too passive for its own good. This is a movie as big as life itself." While Salon said "It's funny, violent and prodigiously romantic; it has immense heart and more gorgeous cinematic moments than I can describe." While MSN Movies declared "It is so full of passion and heart and empathy that it feels completely unlike any other modern film in its range either measured through scope of budget or sweep of action." CLOUD ATLAS is a film that has both lovers and detractors. Which camp are you in? Check out the film streaming on Netflix, Tubi, and IndieFlix or available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, FandangoNow, Vudu and others HERE.
