We were saddened to learn of the passing of the extraordinary actress Cicely Tyson. Our next Rialto Recommends is SOUNDER for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1973. Directed by Martin Ritt who would go on to direct Norma Rae and Murphy's Romance which we previously featured. The Morgans, a family of poor black sharecroppers in the Depression-plagued South, struggle to find enough to eat despite the help their hunting dog, Sounder. When father Nathan (Paul Winfield) resorts to stealing food, he is captured by police and sent to prison, and his wife, Rebecca (Cicely Tyson), is left to care for their son, David (Kevin Hooks). Though Sounder has run away, David never gives up hope that his dog will return, just as he believes that he will see his father again someday. In his four star review Roger Ebert said of SOUNDER "It is one of the most compassionate and truthful of movies, and there's not a level where it doesn't succeed completely." SOUNDER is streaming on The Film Detective or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon.
As a bonus you can also check out Ms. Tyson's performance in the 2014 TV movie THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL from DirectTV or purchase a digital download of from Amazon or Vudu for the price of a regular rental. The film was adapted from the stage play revival for which Ms. Tyson won a Tony Award in 2013 for Best Actress in a Play HERE.
