Our next Rialto Recommends is Ben Lewin's 2012 film THE SESSIONS. Though a childhood bout with polio left him dependent on an iron lung, Mark O'Brien maintains a career as a journalist and poet. A writing assignment dealing with sex and the disabled piques Mark's curiosity, and he decides to investigate the possibility of experiencing sex himself. When his overtures toward a caregiver scare her away, he books an appointment with sex surrogate Cheryl Green to lose his virginity. Tender, funny, and touching, THE SESSIONS provides an acting showcase for its talented stars and proves it's possible for Hollywood to produce a grown-up movie about sex. The New York Times said "THE SESSIONS is a pleasant shock: a touching, profoundly sex-positive film that equates sex with intimacy, tenderness and emotional connection instead of performance, competition and conquest." While the Boston Globe said "The achievement of this simply told, exceptionally fine film is the clarity with which it portrays the drama of a good soul in an inert body." THE SESSIONS is streaming on MaxGo, DirectTV and Cinemax or is available to rent for a modest fee from RedBox, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others.
