Janet McTeer won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in TUMBLEWEEDS which is our next Rialto Recommends choice. A woman constantly runs from town to town with her 12 year old daughter to escape failed relationships. The film opens with one escape and the shift into a new start in San Diego. There Mom takes up with a controlling trucker and fights with her weirdo boss. Meanwhile, the daughter, used to making the constant shifts, finds a fit at school including getting chosen for a play lead. Roger Ebert said “Movies like Tumbleweeds exist in the details, not the outcome. Even a happy ending, we suspect, would be temporary. We don't mind, since the characters have been intriguing to know and easy to care about.” While the Chicago Tribune said “This smart, hardscrabble, very likable film has a heart and spirit all its own.” TUMLEWEEDS is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others.
