The 84th Oscars in 2011 marked the 11th year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave out an award for Best Animated Feature and the first time that two foreign language animated features were amongst the nominees. Our next Rialto Recommends is one of those two features A CAT IN PARIS from the French animation studio Folimage. A thrilling mystery that unfurls in the alleys and on the rooftops of the French capital, Paris, over the course of one adventurous evening. When A CAT IN PARIS screened at the New York Children's Film Festival the New York Times called it "a gorgeous hand-drawn feature that is one of the highlights of this festival. ... Without being too frightening, it projects a sense of danger, both physical and emotional, that is more engaging than the high-pitched thrills of the domestic films." While Time Out Chicago said "this cartoon noir distills Hitchcock into 64 brisk minutes for middle-schoolers and up" and went on to elaborate that the film "announces its retro visual style with a dynamic title sequence that zips across the screen, bursting with Saul Bass-influenced dynamism." It also noted that, despite the title given to the film in English-speaking countries, "its French title, Une Vie de Chat, translates as A Cat's Life." A CAT IN PARIS is streaming on Hoopla and PlutoTV or is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple and Amazon HERE. Good things sometimes come in small packages. Oh, and the other foreign language film that was nominated in 2011 was Chico and Rita from Spain.
