Our next Rialto Recommends is a film we liked a great deal when we saw it at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival prior to its 2014 spring theatrical release. BELLE is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode). Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love. After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England. The New York Times proclaimed "The weave of the personal and the political finally proves as irresistible as it is moving, partly because it has been drawn from extraordinary life." While the Seattle Times said "It's an old-fashioned movie with a very modern streak, centered by a vibrant star turn by Mbatha-Raw, whose watchful, wise Dido makes an enchanting heroine." Variety summed it up when they said "Incongruous as it may seem, the pleasures of Jane Austen and the horrors of the British slave trade make a surprisingly elegant and emotionally satisfying fit in Belle." BELLE is available to stream for a modest rental fee from Microsoft, Redbox, Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, DirectTV and others HERE.
