Our next Rialto Recommends is Richard Eyre's 2017 film THE CHILDREN ACT starring Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci based on Ian McEwan's novel of the same name. As her marriage to Jack Faye (Stanley Tucci) flounders, eminent High Court judge Fiona Maye (Dame Emma Thompson) has a life-changing decision to make at work - should she force a teenage boy, Adam Henry (Fionn Whitehead), to have the blood transfusion that will save his life? Her unorthodox visit to his hospital bedside has a profound impact on them both, stirring strong new emotions in the boy and long-buried feelings in her. IndieWire said "Like so many of the movies that stem from McEwan's novels, THE CHILDREN ACT is a soulful and sophisticated adult drama that peers into the void between the beauty of ideals and the cost of living by them." While the Washington Post said "THE CHILDREN ACT feels utterly of a piece with the original book: urbane, understated, handsomely realized and impeccably interpreted by a cast of superb actors. Released without much fanfare in 2017, THE CHILDREN ACT disappeared from theatres all too quickly. You can stream THE CHILDREN ACT on Amazon, Hoopla and Kanopy or rent it for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu, GooglePlay, YouTube and others HERE.
