starring Lucian Msamati, Adam Gillen with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia

by Peter Shaffer
directed by Michael Longhurst

Vienna: the music capital of the world. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy it. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music and, ultimately, with God.

Peter Shaffer's iconic play had its premiere at the National Theatre in 1979, winning multiple Olivier and Tony awards before being adapted into Milos Forman's Academy Award-winning film.

In this new production, directed by Michael Longhurst (Constellations, The World of Extreme Happiness), Lucian Msamati (NT Live: The Comedy of Errors, Luther, Game of Thrones) plays Salieri and Adam Gillen plays Mozart - with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.

"A note-perfect production by rising director Michael Longhurst that gives it a fresh, vital, and musically inventive new reading, one which fully confirms Amadeus' classic status!"Telegraph UK

"A bold, boisterous, and masterful production. Amadeus is not merely a reproduction or a homecoming, but a soaring and spirited revival that is unmissable"CULTUREWhisper

"Michael Longhurst's thrillingly fresh and imaginative revival has let the air of today into Amadeus in bravura fashion. A virtuosic whirl of bits of scenery, fantastic singers, excerpts from operas that, in their aesthetic, become wittily and pointedly ahead of their time. A triumph!"The Independent

"Adam Gillen delivers the most moving portrayal of Mozart seen since Michael Sheen played the role 20 years ago!"Independent
